F&B businesses we cover

Full-Service Restaurants

Sit-down dining with kitchens, alcohol service, and customer-facing operations — from neighborhood bistros to multi-location concepts.

Bars, Taverns & Cocktail Lounges

Alcohol-forward operations with elevated liquor liability needs and dram shop exposure. Limited food or full kitchen.

Breweries, Wineries & Distilleries

Production plus tasting rooms with property scheduling for production equipment, products liability, and on-premises consumption coverage.

Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors

Commercial auto plus GL plus products liability — a unique combo most generalist agents miss. Includes stationary event coverage.

Event Venues & Banquet Halls

Wedding venues, banquet halls, and event spaces with high-volume occupancy, alcohol service, and special-event coverage needs.

Cafes and Coffee Shops

Coffee shops, bakeries, and cafe operations - from neighborhood favorites to multi-location concepts.

Our Approach

Coverage that knows your kitchen and your bar

F&B operators face a different risk mix than typical retail — liquor liability, food spoilage, equipment breakdown, allergen exposures. Spire structures coverage for what your operation actually faces.

Robust Protection

GL plus liquor liability, property with equipment breakdown, and products liability sized to your real allergen and contamination exposure.

Advocacy

From quoting to claims, we represent your interests — not the carrier's. We push back on declines and unclear policy language.

Compliance Assistance

Stay ahead of state liquor licensing, health department requirements, and dram shop laws with proactive guidance.

Ongoing Support

As your menu evolves, locations expand, or you add catering and events, your coverage moves with you through annual reviews.

What's Covered

Coverages built for food & beverage

Each coverage is subject to underwriting and policy form. Your specific program depends on your operation, alcohol service, and venue type.

General Liability

Third-party bodily injury and property damage. Slip-and-falls, customer injury on premises, and accidental damage from your operations.

Liquor Liability (Dram Shop)

Coverage for claims arising from intoxicated patrons. General liability typically excludes alcohol-related claims, so this is a separate critical policy for any bar or restaurant serving alcohol.

Products Liability

Claims arising from foodborne illness, allergen exposure, or contamination. Often included in GL but limits should match volume.

Property & Equipment Breakdown

Building, fixtures, kitchen equipment, refrigeration. Equipment breakdown with spoilage endorsement covers food/inventory loss from refrigeration failure or power outage.

Workers' Compensation

Medical, lost wages, and disability protection for kitchen and front-of-house staff. Burns, cuts, and slip injuries are common.

Commercial Auto

Vehicle coverage for delivery, catering, food truck operations, and any business-use driving. Hired and non-owned auto for staff vehicles.

Cyber Liability

POS systems, customer payment data, and reservation databases are breach targets. Cyber covers notification, forensics, and recovery costs.

All coverage is subject to underwriting. No coverage is bound or altered until confirmed by an authorized Spire representative.

Frequently Asked

Food & beverage insurance questions

Do I need liquor liability if my restaurant serves alcohol?

Yes. General liability typically excludes alcohol-related claims. Liquor liability (or “dram shop” coverage in many states) is a separate policy that covers claims arising from intoxicated patrons. Required for any business serving alcohol.

What's covered for food spoilage from equipment failure?

Equipment breakdown coverage with a spoilage endorsement covers food and inventory loss from refrigeration failure, power outage, or mechanical breakdown. Often a separate endorsement on commercial property — confirm it's included.

Do food trucks need different insurance than brick-and-mortar restaurants?

Yes. Food trucks need commercial auto plus general liability combined, plus products liability for the food itself. Brick-and-mortar restaurants need property coverage, GL, and often liquor liability. Different policy structures entirely.

How does products liability work for restaurants?

Products liability covers claims if a customer is harmed by your food (allergens, foodborne illness, contamination). Most commercial GL policies for restaurants include products liability — but limits are often low. Review them against your daily volume.
